HISTORY OF BMIS
Recognising the adverse situation of blind girls and destitute women of Bangladesh, the Baptist Sangha School for Blind Girls started an education program with five blind girls in 1977, in a rented house in Mirpur, Dhaka. The goal of this school was to empower the visually impaired girls by providing an educational facility. It bought a piece of land in 1979 and built a two-storied building to offer education and residential hostel facilities to blind girls. The hostel can accommodate up to 100 girls. This school introduced an inclusive education program in 2007. Since then its name has been changed and adopted the new name of the Baptist Mission Integrated School (BMIS).
The first Braille press was purchased in 1983 to develop learning materials. Its objective is to develop and provide learning materials to the students of both BMIS and other schools that are implementing the same kind of education to blind children in Dhaka City.
The BMIS has been providing different services to the visually impaired girls for the last 40 years. Over 300 visually impaired girls have enrolled in the school in this period. In 2015, it passed 100 girls who have passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC). According to the school register, 34 girls are now studying in Colleges / Universities. About 38 girls are successfully engaged in jobs. BMIS’s intervention is making the foundation of special education and inclusion in the community. BMIS is engaged in continuing education for the blind girls from all over Bangladesh. It covers 80 villages in some 34 districts in the country.
